“Blanchard captures the spirit of the journey in his uniquely illustrated portraits.”
In Shores and Summits I wanted to highlight not only what I had done in my four years as an art student, but the world in which I was raised and the people I have met along the way. This was solo exhibition I was awarded my senior year at the California State University Channel Islands. Taking a look into the surf and mountain subcultures of souther California I illustrated portraits of people I felt were on the road less traveled. These portraits were not of the individual themselves but of the individual through their most prized possessions. The show included shirts I designed, screen printed knots and digitally illustrated Portraits of peoples gear. Making the connection with peoples journeys on the coast and in the mountains I drew from symbolism and textures of these environments. Using flags as symbolism referencing nautical and prayer flags to create the bridge between Shores and Summits.
